Export Sales and International Sales
From afar it can appear to be glamorous, jetting off a couple of times per month to faraway, exotic destinations to close major details. In truth, it can be extremely hard work and is not a role for the faint hearted. Many export sales professionals that we’ve worked with are renowned experts in airport departure lounges and, unfortunately, see little of the countries to which they travel.
Export sales can also impinge on your personal and family life. Whilst in most international sales roles you are given fair advance notice of meetings and you are able to plan accordingly sometimes the role does require you to drop everything and check onto a jumbo!
Most of the export sales roles in the UK cover EMEA or Europe, Middle East and Africa. EMEA has become a popular jargonised term that now often includes India and the far reaches of the ex-Soviet Union.
There are many forms of export and international sales jobs from those where you are managing overseas staff or country managers that also work for your global employer. Often the role is managing overseas agents and distributors, or indeed setting up distributor networks that will sell your company’s products and services on your behalf, typically for a commission or percentage of the sale. Other export sales jobs involve true business development, foraging away for end user clients. Often in these circumstances much of the sale has been qualified before an overseas trip and the face-to-face meeting is to ‘close the deal’ or to build credibility and a business relationship
