Cost of Commuting Calculator
The most comprehensive cost of commuting calculator — based on your exact car, your real route and today's fuel and electricity prices.
Commuting Costs
The cost of getting to work can take a surprising chunk out of your monthly budget. This calculator shows you exactly what your commute costs — weekly, monthly and annually — so you can make informed decisions about where you work, the car you drive and how you get there.
It works for petrol, diesel and electric vehicles and draws on official data for more than 7,500 UK cars, so the figures reflect your actual vehicle rather than a rough average.
How to Use the Calculator
Just answer a few quick questions:
- How many days a week you commute
- Your fuel type — petrol, diesel or electric
- The price you pay per litre (or per kWh) — we pre-fill the latest average UK prices, so simply adjust it to match what you pay at the pump or on your tariff
- Your car's make and model — we'll use its official MPG (or Wh/mile for electric cars); or enter your own figure if you prefer
- Your home and work postcodes
The calculator then maps your route, works out the real driving distance and drive time, and tells you what that commute really costs.
Some Things to Consider
- The calculator is based on average costs. Your actual costs may vary depending on the specific factors of your commute.
- The calculator does not include the cost of your time. The time you spend commuting is also valuable, and you should consider this cost when making transportation choices.
- The calculator is a starting point. You may need to adjust the numbers to get a more accurate estimate of your costs.
