A new study by Travelodge has shown that almost three-quarters (72 per cent) of British workers are effectively doing ten hours of unpaid overtime every single week.
On the average UK hourly wage of £12.76, this equates to £127.60 worth of weekly losses for the employee or a massive £6,635.20 saved by companies per person every single year. In total, UK businesses are collectively saving £142 billion every year by this means.
The survey revealed that people are doing this in order both to keep on top of their work and to appease their line manager.
Shockingly, a third of the British working population is committing an extra 16 unpaid hours per week to their job, on top of their contracted obligations.
Londoners are the worst culprits for this behaviour, giving an average of 12 hours extra every single week.
With further results revealing that a third of Brits find it a struggle to get through their working week, perhaps employers and employees should be more aware of the effect this kind of behaviour may have on both productivity and morale among workforces.
