Young people need to be motivated to stay in education and training until the age of 18, it has been claimed.
Commenting on the Royal Assent of the Education and Skills Bill which will raise the age that Britons are required to stay in education, Confederation of British Industry head of education and skills Richard Wainer said forcing youngsters to stay in the classroom will benefit no-one.
"Without high quality guidance and support, many firms may choose not to employ 16-17 year olds - leading to the unintended consequence of even more teenagers not in education, training or employment," he continued.
Mr Wainer went on to say firms may also be discouraged from giving young people work opportunities if they have to provide accredited training or police their employee's attendance at college.
Earlier this week, managing director of the British Chambers of Commerce John Dunsmure claimed it is not necessary for all potential recruits looking to work in business to go to university.
