I recommend to candidates that they put together a presentation at second interview, even if they haven't been asked. And when I walk you through what I recommend that you do, I think it will make sense, because what it does is it makes you really think, do I actually want to work for this employer? Am I the right person for this role? And it makes you go through a process of deciding whether it's the right role and the right company for your career.

So what does a second interview presentation contain? Well, I'd recommend that it contains an introduction and kind of an agenda, and then an overview of who you are, both personally and in your work life, what you've achieved, so detailing all of your achievements. And then going into why you're interested in this role, and your skills and experience and why you're right for it specifically, and why you want to work for the company, and really a handful of really passionate facts about why you want to join them. You can then finish with a close to really detail exactly why you're right for their business.

And on the website, if you download the PDF on second interview presentations, it will give you a walk through of a classic second interview presentation. You can use this to close a meeting, but a real golden rule, don't use it as your safety blanket. If you haven't been asked to prepare a presentation and they ask you a question-- tell us about a recent deal that you've won-- the worst thing is then diving into your briefcase, pulling out the presentation, I've prepared it here. They don't want it.

The best way to use the second interview presentation is as follows. At the end of the meeting, "I've really enjoyed your time. I know I could do a fantastic job for you. I did put together a presentation, but I didn't feel it was right to deliver it throughout the meeting. It's just been a fantastic open and frank meeting. But I'd like to leave a copy with you all". And make sure that it's nicely printed, it's nicely bound, it looks professional, and then hand it out at the end with your contact information, your CV, perhaps photocopies of all your certificates, references, testimonials, et cetera, that real addendum to your CV that's going to make them go, wow, he is the right person for our business.

Sometimes, you will be asked to prepare something quite specific as a second presentation. I actually recommend to employers that they get the sales candidates to set their own key performance indicators as part of the second interview process because then you've got realistic KPIs for you and for them from the outset. Common themes that people choose, they may choose a theoretical client, they may choose a particular region and the kind of targets that you would go for in that area. And no, they're not looking to get information from you. They're looking to see how your commercial mind works.
