Job creation needed in north-east and Cumbria, says report

Figures from the Northern Trades Union Congress have revealed that more job creation is needed in the north-east regions and Cumbria.

Even though the coalition has announced the creation of jobs and surges in employment statistics, the report has shown that local authorities in these areas of the country are now seeing at least ten per cent more jobseekers than there were before the current government came into power.

County Durham and Darlington have seen 30 per cent more, while Northumberland has been the worst affected with 37 per cent more individuals looking for work.

Since the cuts, which in many sectors have had a major negative effect on the jobs market, almost 50,000 public sector positions have been lost and the rate of employment stands at 64 per cent. This means that, in the north-east, there are 7.5 jobseekers on average going for every vacancy and four times as many in Cumbria.
