Girl power in the boardroom

A study of more than 600 board directors published in the International Journal of Business Governance and Ethics has suggested that women may be better at making decisions than their male counterparts, perhaps making them more successful business leaders.

The research was carried out by professor of strategic management at McMaster University's DeGroote School of Business Chris Bart and Gregory McQueen - a McMaster graduate and senior executive associate dean at AT Still University's School of Osteopathic Medicine in Arizona.

It showed that women were more likely not only to take the rights of others more into consideration but also to take a more cooperative approach in their decision-making. They also seemed to be less restricted by rules, regulations and traditions in order to reach the right conclusion, as well as being more considerate of investors.

Because of this, figures show that boardrooms with significant female representation enjoy a 53 per cent greater return on equity, 66 per cent higher return on investment and 42 per cent higher return on sales.
