Commercial nouse 'increasingly important for marketing roles'

News that multinational food giants Mondelez International and Mars are boosting their recruitment of business studies graduates for international sales and marketing roles has highlighted the importance of general business knowledge on the jobs market nowadays.

Marketing Week reported how the two firms are looking for more candidates from non-marketing backgrounds in the hope that they will have a stronger sense of commerce, which can then be applied in their day-to-day duties.

A spokeswoman for Mondelez said of the move: “The biggest change over the past five years is the need for us to recruit and develop rounded commercial-focused individuals."

Similarly, HR director at Mars UK Amanda Davies told Marketing Week how those with the potential to move to more senior marketing roles tended to be the employees with better business know-how.

With the employment market as competitive now as it ever has been, it is increasingly important that potential candidates have as broad a skills set as possible, with well-rounded knowledge of not just industry specifics but also of the working world more generally.
