Google rumoured to be planning a smartwatch too

While rumours have been circulating about an Apple iWatch and Samsung also working on a high-tech piece of wristwear, further whisperings are afoot about Google designing its own contribution to the smartwatch market.

At the Southwest Interactive Festival - a gathering of technophiles in Austin, Texas - everybody was chattering about Google's new 'talking shoes'. As suggested, the pair of Adidas trainers featured a small computer, sensors, speakers and a Bluetooth wireless controller, meaning they could shout at the wearer if they were not moving enough.

Now it is suspected that Google plans to move further from the digital to the physical by designing a new technology-laden smartwatch.

As the Financial Times reported, a patent was filed for such a device in 2011, which only further stoked the rumour fire. However, a spokeswoman for Google declined to comment directly on the smartwatch market.

Now that these technological giants have filled our pockets with smartphones, mp3 players and a host of other gizmos, it is not surprising that they should look to dressing our wrists in gadget splendour.
