UK labour market continues to defy the doom-mongers, says REC

The Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC) has said the population should feel positive in light of results regarding the UK labour market released by the Office for National Statistics (ONS).

Director of policy and professional services with the organisation Tom Hadley claimed that the UK job market is continuing to disprove the sceptics, as it is showing signs of gradual improvement - despite the country still facing considerable economic challenges, having recently been stripped of its AAA credit rating.

On the back of the ONS results, he went on to say that sentiment regarding the market this year remains "very positive", although he hastened to add that concerns still simmered regarding youth unemployment rates, as in the UK they have risen fastest out of any G8 nation.

While public spending cuts have resulted in numerous redundancies and stagnating wages, the public sector has helped offset some of the effects of this as increasing numbers of businesses compete for the best job candidates.

Mr Hadley added: "Business demand for candidates in highly skilled areas like engineering, IT and management is outstripping the UK’s current supply of qualified and experienced candidates," which is leaving gaps in the market for young talents to fill.
