Sony to launch new PlayStation this year

Sony has announced that it intends to release the next-generation PlayStation this year in order to keep up with rivals releasing new versions of their own games consoles, with speculation rife that Microsoft will be releasing a successor to the Xbox 360 later this summer.

The launch would represent the company's first videogame console release in seven years as Sony tries to revive its stagnating electronics business.

In order to keep up with competitors, the new model will allow gamers to stream and play videogames, play while downloading titles and share videos with friends.

The company has implied that the console will be ready for the year-end holiday, as the gaming industry faces increased challenges as smartphones and tablets encroach on their market. Such devices already account for around ten per cent of the $80 billion (£52.4 million) gaming market, Reuters reported.

Interestingly, the company has not yet revealed what the console will look like - only publishing pictures of the controller, which was received with a mixed response.
