Cambridge, Oxford and Edinburgh 'best UK cities for business'

A survey has revealed that the best city for business in the UK is Cambridge, followed closely by Oxford and Edinburgh.

Based on 20 factors relating to business competitiveness and success in various towns and cities across the UK, the research by Santander also considered different boroughs of London using the same criteria, finding Westminster to be the best out of the 32 London boroughs studied.

Of the 74 urban centres comprising the study, other cities which ranked highly in the findings were Reading (7th), Bristol (9th) and York (13th), while some smaller towns also featured in the list - for example, Crawley (4th), Worthing (5th), Aldershot (8th) and Solihull (10th).

Encompassing the factors used to compile the report, five primary domains were used for which towns and cities were also ranked separately - namely enterprise, talent, connectivity, costs and well-being, described by Santander as "fundamental building blocks for business success".

Cambridge came out on top for enterprise and talent, Edinburgh for connectivity, Luton for costs and Crawley for well-being.

Marcelino Castrillo, head of small and medium-sized enterprises at Santander Corporate and Commercial, said: "It is vital that all stakeholders [...] encourage and foster business growth - the UK economy is, after all, the aggregate of our businesses."
